Apache commands and linux tips for making your web server work better

Basic Security Tips

Passwords should be of adequate strength. This means no easy to guess passwords like "Hello" or "Mum". More secure passwords will contain both numbers and letters and be at least eigth characters in length, for example A5b6igH1. If you try few times you can still remember this!(Its best not to write your password down or store it anywhere).

By default on my linux distributions the default age allowed for a password is 99999 days, after this time the password must be changed well 99999 days is a bit much and insecure. It is suggested that you change this in /etc/login.defs

Watch Your Disc Space!

If your server runs out of disc space you are in trouble, and website oweners will not be happy! A simple task in windows however most people dont know how to do this in linux from the command line.

The linux command for disc usage is
[root]#> df

To get the output in MB instead of KB (more readable) use
[root]#> df -h
