A Payment Gateway is an e-commerce service that authorizes payments for online stores. Instead of having a machine the transaction is passed securely over the internet. Payment gateways encrypt sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, to ensure that information passes securely between the customer and the merchant.

Choosing a payment gateway

We recommend using the protx gateway, there service is the number 1 in the UK and is based on a flat monthly rate. Your business will need a merchant account in order to use the protx service.

For businesses just starting or lower turnover then you can use a processor like PAYPAL. Similar to making a purchase from ebay and well recognised now by most internet buyers. The best part is you can start taking payments instantly!

A payment gateway or processor is used to take customers credit and debit card details online. To allow fully integrated payment processing without leaving your own website you will usually require an internet merchant account. A merchant account is an agreement with a merchant bank that allows you to accept payment by credit and debit card. This is a separate account from your business account and because not all banks are acquiring banks, you can have an internet merchant account at a different bank from the one where your business account is located.

New businesses may not be able to get adequate terms or the fees maybe higher, there is also a setup fee applied to merchant accounts. In such cases an offsite payment processor such as PAYPAL can be used. The have generally higher fees but free setup, it may also take longer for the money to get into your bank account however, you will not need a seperate SSL certificate for your site as all processing is done securely on PAYPALs site.
